The Non-Negotiables: Safety And Compliance First
Before considering any other quality factor, two compliance requirements must be confirmed for any children's entertainer: an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate and public liability insurance. These are not optional extras or premium features — they are basic professional requirements for anyone working commercially with children.
An enhanced DBS check means the performer has been formally screened for criminal records relevant to working with children and vulnerable people. Any professional entertainer should be able to provide a copy of their current DBS certificate on request and without hesitation. If an entertainer is evasive or unable to provide this documentation, do not book them regardless of price or other factors.
Public liability insurance protects you and the entertainer in the event of any accidental injury or property damage during the event. For children's entertainment, cover of at least £1 million is standard; £5 million is considered best practice for larger events. Again, a professional provider should confirm their insurance level immediately and provide documentation on request.
Evaluating Performance Quality
Once compliance is confirmed, the quality of the entertainment experience itself becomes the key differentiator. This is harder to assess in advance, but several strong indicators exist. Look for: a professional online presence with genuine photos and videos of performances; verifiable testimonials from real clients (not just anonymous reviews); clear, detailed descriptions of what the entertainment set includes; and evidence of longevity — a company that has been operating for multiple years with consistent positive feedback is far lower risk than a newer or less established provider.
Read reviews critically. Look for specifics: descriptions of what the entertainer did well, how children responded, whether timing and structure were well managed, and whether the experience matched what was promised. Generic praise ("brilliant!") is less informative than specific descriptions of the experience. Volume of reviews over time is also meaningful — consistent positive feedback across many events over several years is a very strong quality signal.
Questions To Ask Before Booking
A confident, professional entertainment provider will answer these questions readily and in detail. Ask them: Is the performer DBS checked and can I see the certificate? What public liability insurance do you carry? What exactly is included in the quoted price? Are travel costs included? How many years has the company been operating? Who specifically will be performing at my event? What is your cancellation policy? Can you provide references from recent bookings?
Pay attention not just to the answers but to how they are given. Prompt, detailed, confident responses indicate an organised professional operation. Vague, evasive or delayed responses to basic professional questions are a warning sign regardless of the specific content.
Price As A Quality Signal
Very low prices are a quality warning, not a value opportunity. Professional character entertainment involves genuine costs: performer training and vetting, premium costume investment and maintenance, insurance, DBS check fees, equipment and props, and professional administration. Providers offering character entertainment at significantly below-market rates are cutting corners somewhere — and those corners are typically performer quality, costume quality, or safety compliance.
Compare quotes that include the same package elements. A lower headline price that excludes travel, prizes and certificates may end up costing more in total than a slightly higher all-inclusive quote. Always clarify exactly what is and isn't included before comparing prices.
Costume Quality Matters More Than You Think
The costume is the first thing every child sees — and within seconds of seeing the performer, children make a judgement about whether this is "the real thing." A premium, screen-accurate costume passes that test immediately and credibly. A low-quality costume fails it just as quickly, and a child who doesn't believe in the character from the first moment will be significantly less engaged throughout the entire visit.
Ask potential providers about their costumes. Do they own them or hire them? Are they regularly maintained and cleaned? Can you see photos of the actual costumes in use at events? A provider proud of their costume quality will be happy to show you evidence. A provider who deflects this question may have reason to do so.
